Meet Minnie

Minnie is a space where childhood gets to be exactly what it is — messy, magical, and full of wonder.

We've created somewhere families can slow down and connect. Where timeless design meets developmental support. Where kids of all abilities can grow through play, and parents can breathe easier knowing there's no pressure to have it all figured out.

In a city that often moves fast and looks perfect, Minnie offers something a little softer and a little slower. We believe the best moments of childhood happen when families feel free to simply be themselves.

Nicole Spoelma

Founder

Nicole Spoelma is the founder of Minnie, a design-forward children’s concept space in Miami Beach that blends curated retail, sensory play, and community programming under one roof. With a Master’s degree in Special Education and over 15 years of experience working with children and families, Nicole created Minnie as a home away from home for families. Minnie's origin is rooted in Nicole's personal journey of loss, single motherhood, her love of design and passion for educational equity.

After discovering her great-great-great grandmother Minnie Hemmes' marriage license in a folder of old files from her late father, Nicole decided to name her business Minnie. “Minnie” reflects both her family heritage and the magic of smallness, while “Hemmes” translates to “illustrious home,” perfectly capturing her vision for a welcoming, shoppable and accessible space for all families. Inspired by European design and the “lost arts” of slower living, she is passionate about creating a space where families can connect, play, and grow together.

In her spare time, Nicole loves spending time with her son Tom, reminiscing about the 90's, collecting and diving into design projects on a whim.

Courtney Porter

Director of Programming

Courtney Porter is a passionate and dedicated early childhood educator with a well-rounded, intentional approach to programming and curriculum development. As the Director of Programming at Minnie, Courtney draws from a rich and diverse background in early childhood education, ranging from the foundational work of Head Start programs to the innovative, child-centered practices of Reggio Emilia schools.

With a deep understanding of developmental milestones and the importance of sensory-based learning, she works to create immersive, inclusive, and joyful experiences that support children and families in meaningful ways. Her mission is to bridge the gap between thoughtful, play-based education and integrated family engagement, ensuring that learning doesn’t stop at the classroom—it becomes a shared experience.

A lifelong lover of music, Courtney has brought her passion into educational spaces through her work with the Jaron M. LeGrair Studio, where she led interactive workshops that introduced children to proper vocal techniques and music fundamentals through play. She strongly believes in the power of creative expression to support social-emotional growth and cognitive development.

Outside of her work, Courtney is often found at the beach, laughing with loved ones, hunting for cozy coffee shops, exploring local farmers markets, and making music with friends. She loves Miami and continues to find inspiration exploring the vibrant culture, art, and energy of the city, which she happily brings into her work every day.

Maggie Slavonic

Minnie x Mothership Market; Curated by Maggie Slavonic, NTP, RWP

Maggie Slavonic is a mom of two, a Functional Nutritional Therapist, an award–winning Creative Director, and the Founder of Mom Snacks (launching soon!)—the first functional snack brand created to nourish moms through every phase of ‘mom’-ing. After a near-death birthing experience, Maggie realized just how little real support moms get—not just in the early days, but throughout the wild, chaotic, and wonderful ride of motherhood. That wake-up call inspired her to make moms feel seen, nourished, and celebrated every single day. Mothership Market at Minnie is a playful, purposeful curation of functional snacks and lifestyle picks. Some are supercharged with nutrients, some are just plain fun—but all are handpicked to make moms’ lives tastier, easier, and a little more joyful. Whether you need a boost, a treat, or just a moment for yourself, there’s something here with you in mind.
